Wait a minute, why would I want to be rich when the Bible says that it’s easier for a camel to fit through the eye of a needle than a rich man to enter heaven? That’s a good question, and the topic of money and riches isn’t brushed over in the Bible (see for yourself with these 250 Bible verses about money). As Christians, I don’t think we should be afraid of having money – it’s our attitude towards money that we should watch carefully! The problem with wealth is that we can make it a god in our lives. That is, we can spend too much time seeking out worldly wealth and forget about being content.

So when we find scriptures in the Bible that point to riches and wealth, we need to be careful how we look at them. If we look at these verses as a recipe to create worldly wealth, we’re missing the point. True wealth and riches aren’t found on this earth. We know this from Matthew 6:19-21 . . .

Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

As you read through these Proverbs, think carefully about the cause and effect of wealth. The wisest and wealthiest man in the world wrote these as a way for us to truly understand that all wealth comes from God. When we understand this and focus on humility, wisdom, generosity, hard work, and contentment we can expect to be enriched.

7 Proverbs That Will Make You Rich

Proverbs 22:4

True humility and fear of the Lord lead to riches, honor, and long life.
Proverbs 8:18-21
I [wisdom] have riches and honor, as well as enduring wealth and justice. My gifts are better than gold, even the purest gold, my wages better than sterling silver! I walk in righteousness, in paths of justice. Those who love me inherit wealth. I will fill their treasuries.

Proverbs 3:9, 10
Honor the Lord with your wealth and with the best part of everything you produce. Then he will fill your barns with grain, and your vats will overflow with good wine.

Proverbs 13:11
Wealth from get-rich-quick schemes quickly disappears; wealth from hard work grows over time.

Proverbs 13:4
Lazy people want much but get little, but those who work hard will prosper.

Proverbs 30:7-9
O God, I beg two favors from you; let me have them before I die. First, help me never to tell a lie. Second, give me neither poverty nor riches! Give me just enough to satisfy my needs. For if I grow rich, I may deny you and say, “Who is the Lord?” And if I am too poor, I may steal and thus insult God’s holy name.

Proverbs 11:24
Give freely and become more wealthy; be stingy and lose everything.

3 Extra Verses On Securing Poverty

How many people would be quick to say that poverty is on the top of their list of goals? I don’t know anyone who wants to volunteer to live a life of poverty. Solomon addresses both sides of wealth and gives some warning on actions that lead to a less fulfilling and impoverished life.

Proverbs 1:19
Such is the fate of all who are greedy for money; it robs them of life.

Proverbs 22:16
A person who gets ahead by oppressing the poor or by showering gifts on the rich will end in poverty.

Proverbs 24:33, 34
A little extra sleep, a little more slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest—then poverty will pounce on you like a bandit; scarcity will attack you like an armed robber.

Which of these Proverbs resonates with you the most today? Do you have a favorite verse in Proverbs that speaks to you often?
