I was so lucky I did not find a job!

However, one year later, kaboooom, it was my turn to be retired by the company I worked for. I was forced to put some effort in the business that IMG offered but I was half hearted. I was not focused on business. I still hoped that I could go back to the career I academically and experience wise was prepared and comfortable with. My money mind set has not be fully converted. I was still programmed to be an employee. My JOB attachments and my brains are too tough to breakdown. But months passed and I was not lucky, or looking back, I was so lucky I did not find a job!

The company (IMG) opened our minds in the reality that the financial solutions our parent had no longer applies to ours. My father and Fely's father were both in the uniformed service. "Tatay" ( it is how we call our father) was a policeman. His career started and ended as a policeman. We are twelve in the family. He had no business, and did not encourage us to go for business. He was able to support all of us 12 of his children in our education. So my mind pattern is to be an employee with good pay and like my father retire as an employee. So when the company retired us before our desired plan, we were left without a choice but to pursue our own business.

Chapter Two: Our Mindset Conversion

Mid of 2007 Fely was already notified by her company that her job will be eliminated and thus her position will no longer exist. She was identified for early retirement. So before she actually reached her last day in office, we searched for guidance how we will be able to manage our finances. We bought and read books. We attended seminars and studied different business options. During this time I was still employed, and Fely was still receiving her monthly salary. There was not as much pressure to embark on a business at this time.

November of that year, we decided to join a company named International Marketing Group-IMG. This is after we learned about it in Bro Bo Sanchez's Truly Rich Coaching Seminar. Our only motivation is for us to become the broker for all our financial services needs such as our investments, property insurance, and healthcare. Business is at that point something we did not seriously consider yet as I was still employed and receives my monthly income. We just wanted to make sure we get our finances in order and have the retirement money of Fely invested properly. For us, business takes the back seat. It is not a priority.

What Drove Us to Get Off from J-O-B?....

Fely and I frantically looked for a job. But Fely and I were over qualified for most job vacancies, and our previous salaries are too high. The options we have going back to a job is so slim that it is practically to our disadvantage. Days passed by, months passed by, and finally a year passed and I failed to get into a job. With too many responsibilities, and too many payables to worry about, this became our driving force to seriously pursue our own business and get off from the JOB- Journey Of the Broke.

Change of Tide in Our Career....

We programmed ourselves to retire at age 60 and then enjoy our retirement. Early on with our career, we were high flyers. That was in the first decade. The second decade when we were married with growing kids were the trying moments. It was really pressure laden, and it was also the period where we have accumulated so much debts. I remember going home one night after working for more than 12 hours in the office, half dazed and defocused on my driving that I almost met an accident. This was due to the job pressures, and demands of my job and my boss.

We were caught in a tumultuous and fast changing decade. The decade that saw the world economy giants start to collapse. Companies started to do drastic cost cutting measures. Our respective companies started also to shrink their factories, and consolidate their resources. We faced the greatest fears in our JOB: retrenchment, redundancy, early retirement and outright cutting headcounts (same objectives with different names- reduced manpower).

The third decade was the most disastrous part of our career. What we thought as retirement at age 60 came early. Actually it was too early as Fely was just 48, and I was 52 when the company we worked for retired us. Fely's retirement was a little more pleasant than mine. She was given at least 6 months of transition prior to her actual separation from her company. Mine was totally different. It was a terrible experience.

Let me tell you about that last phase in my corporate life: I was able to detect something anomalous in our way of handling our quarantined products. Instead of fixing the problem, and improving the system, the blame was placed on me. Eventually, it was me who was asked to do the explaining. Finally, they surprised me by offering me an early retirement. I was revolting inside me. I felt betrayed and used. I felt the whole world tumbled on me as I think of how I can support the education of my children, and how do we survive our day to day existence. I trembled in fear as I calculate the mountain of debts and responsibilities I have to face out from employment! What now? How do we survive?

Chapter One: Our JOB (Journey Of the Broke)

Fely and I were both engineers. We were both the first engineers in our respective family. We were both high flyers in Elementary, High School and College. Fely graduated Valedictorian in Elementary and is consistent honor student in High School, while I am always in the Top 5 of the class and obtained my Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering on a Scholarship Grant by the National State Scholarship of the Philippine Government. All the academic preparations are motivated by a dream of making it good in school and landing on a good job. The usual dream of parents in our period is for us to complete our education so we can land a good job in a company. Work on the company we get into and retire in it.

After my graduation, I was taken in as an Instructor in the Mechanical Engineering Department of Adamson University where I finished my engineering. For three years, I was in the academe and as fate would have it, this university is where Fely and I would meet and fall in love.

My first taste of an industry exposure is at Intel Philippines. It was the largest semiconductor manufacturing company at that time I was employed. After two years in that company, Fely also joined the company. We were not yet married at that time. We both enjoyed good paying job. We then got married and were happy to have our combined income to be more than we need. We also had the opportunity to be assigned for an overseas training. We were very good in what we do and got ourselves go up the corporate ladder. So who needs to get into business at this state?

Fely stayed on with Intel and completed about 25 years of faithful service. I moved from Intel to Amkor to Orient Semicon. For many years, we enjoyed our career growth and our pay increase. We had major wins and achievements in our job that hypnotized us to believe that our jobs can bring us to our comfortable retirement

Introduction continued....

Fely and I are both Engineers. We graduated from the same University. Fely: an Industrial Engineer and me (Benj): a Licensed Mechanical Engineer. We both worked for Multi-national companies as Managers before our conversion to businessmen, and missionaries of financial literacy. We had spent more than 25 years of our life in the corporate world and planned that we retire from the company that we worked with. We never had any business of our own. We were employees for so many years and we were happy being just like that.

We earn very well and lived comfortably. We have cars, properties, and paper assets. We have rental incomes and we had set up our minds for retirement in the company we are working with. We thought that our retirement money will be more than enough for us to live the lifestyle and dreams we have for our retirement. But, reality hit us one day when Fely was identified to be retired from her job before she even turned 50.

A double whammy hit us after another year for it was my turn to be retired at age 52. We panicked, or should I say actually double panicked! Here we are in this stage of our life with so much experience and expertise, but jobless. We searched for jobs local and international and offers come in trickles and with low pay. We got job offers in a lower post with almost ¼ of our previous salary.

But God is really good and He always provide. We searched for financial literacy seminars and books to finally prepare for a shift from a career in the manufacturing world into business. We knew we will have difficulty in finding a job so we must be able to set up our own business. We bought and read books by Bro Bo and Robert Kiyosaki. We attended the Financial Coaching seminar by Bro Bo. This gave us the basic information and sparked in us the desire to create our own business.

What we thought as a career disaster in our life became the turning point for a big business venture. This book we have written entitled "SIMPLE CLEAR FAST DOABLE BUSINESS… You Can Do It Too" details how we started and how we became champions in our business.
